Reflections Of The Smokies

Picture
It is truly wonderful to have the opportunity to experience the beauty of Spring in the Smokies this year.  It seems like the beautiful and mild spring weather may hold on as long as the harsh winter weather did.  This nice spring weather has a peaceful and calming effect on me.  The weather man says we have some more of it on the way.  I've been out in some hard weather this winter.  Being out in this fantastic spring weather brings a little balance.

Early Yellow Violet On The Bull Head Trail, 4/10
Spring is bursting to life as quickly as the snow melts.  This photo really told me a story of how the sun warms the earth in spring bringing life from the decay of winter.  This is a spot that was covered with a few feet of snow just a couple weeks before and already coming to life.  It's a wonderful time to get out and enjoy the coming of spring.

Hey!  Check it out, the Friends Of Great Smoky Mountains National Park are celebrating the opening of Cades cove by raising money for the park with a race around the loop road.

Vehicle access to Cades Cove before noon on Sunday, April 25, 2010 will require one of the special Cades Cove Loop Lope car passes. A checkpoint will be installed at the Townsend Wye for verification. After 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. April 25th, the road will open to normal traffic.

Runners will receive a special t-shirt, a reusable shopping bag filled with goodies, and a very special race medallion. Prizes will be awarded to the overall male and female 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers for both races, as well as the top finishers in each age category.

"This is something that runners have requested for years, but the Park has declined to permit it because of the enormous popularity of the Cove. The Park decided to offer us this opportunity in celebration of the Loop Road's first major renovation in over 30 years. The Park confirmed just last week that construction would be finished a month ahead of schedule, so we had a very small window to pull it all together. We could not have done it without the support of Kristy Altman and the Knoxville Track Club,' says Friends' President Jim Hart.

Race sponsors are 21st Century Mortgage, Citizens National Bank, NOC's Great Outpost, Pilot Travel Centers, Smoky Mountain Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dancing Bear Lodge, Knoxville News-Sentinel, WBIR-TV, WIVK/WNOX, Bluegill Creative, Cades Cove Heritage Tours, Dollywood, Food City, Hard Rock Café Gatlinburg, Historic Springs Bottling Company, Knoxville Track Club, LeConte Medical Center, and Runner's Market.

I had the opportunity to climb the Bull Head Trail This week.  It was a great hike.  It was almost like summer time at the trail head.  As I went up the mountain I walked into spring.  As I got towards the top of the mountain it was still winter with stretches of deep snow and ice.  The was a little ice and sleet in the higher elevations of the Smokies today.  Winter is still reluctant to release it's icy grip.

Trillium Found On The Bull Head Trail In The Smokies, 4/10
Spring has finally come in strong enough in the Smokies for some beautiful wildflowers.  The Trillium is one of m favorites.  I saw a lot of Trillium and other wildflowers on the Bull Head Trail going up Mt. LeConte.  I think we will see a fantastic show of blooms this spring.  I hope you will be able to get out and enjoy them as soon as this rain passes.

There is no natural delicacy better than Ramps.  The first warm days of spring bring us  the delicious and tender sprouts.  If you've never had any Ramps you're missing out on a lasting experience.  You can always tell when another friend has been enjoying Ramps.  Ramps, just like Love grow wild in the woods of East Tennessee in the early spring.  and just like Love you will never forget the experience!  Well, I've got to go cook some Ramps and Eggs.

Happy April Fools Day!  This is the day of the year that always reminds me to have fun!  I think that sometimes we all take ourselves a little too seriously.  Today I will try to not take myself too seriously.  I will have some fun today!  I will try to caeey this fun with me everyday this year.  But in haveing a good time I won't avoid dealing with any issues that arise in life.  I have found that in facing and dealing with issues as they arise, I have fewer and fewer issues in my life!  Have a good
