An early frost followed by some snow on Mt LeConte puts a strong punctuation mark on the beginning of Fall here in the Smokies.  Now it seems like the extremely hot days of Summer are far behind us.  I am really looking forward to the mellow feelings and vibrant colors that come with fall in the Smokies.  The Sourwood and Mountain ash are already showing their vibrant Fall beauty..

It seems like we may have gone from hot to cold this year.  But there are still a few warm days ahead before the winter greets us again.  It's time to embrace change and dust off my cold weather hiking gear.  It's hard to say what stirs my soul more, the dramatic Winter ice and snow, the vibrant greens of Spring, the color of the high elevation Summer blooms or the rich and mellow oranges, reds and yellows of Fall

I would have loved to have been at the lodge for that first frosting ! I envy you for staying up there as caretaker during the winter season when the lodge is closed. I may tell Tim again that I'll come up sometime in January or February and relieve you for two or three days ! I'd love that.
