Timber Rattler Near The Mt. Cammerer Trail Junction On The AT in October
I am always suprised to see a big
Timber Rattler in the Smokies.  But to see one at over 5000 feet of elevation
and on a cool Fall day was awesome!  I was hiking near the Mt. Cammerer Trail
junction when I thought, "What a crazy looking stick."  My crazy looking stick
turned out to be a 3 foot Timber Rattler trying to soak up some sun on a cool
day.

Fall Colors Highlight the Beauty of the Mountain in Our Smokies
As my season as Ridgerunner on the
AT here in our beautiful Smokies starts winding down, I am still absolutly
amazed by the beauty of our mountains.  The Fall color is fantastic!  The early
frost in early October seems to have brought on some really vibrant Fall color
in our Smokies.  I hope that you have been able to get out and take it in.  I
have a feeling that the snows will soon be here with Winter's icey grip and our
Fall color will be gone.  Yet the constant change and growth is part of the
beauty of the Mountains.

The Ash Berries Add A Beautiful Splash Of Red To Our Mountains
As I reflect back on the experiences I have enjoyed hiking our beautiful Great Smoky Mountains over the past few months, I am reminded that The Destination Truly Lies In The Journey.  What a great journey it has been.  I am continually humbled by the awesome sights of our beautiful Mountains.  We are truly blessed to be able to experience this Land Of The Blue Smoke.

Doug-of all the many hikes I have been on I have seen only 2 rattlers. That was enough. :) To me they are more threatening than bears.
Love your pictures and I love FALL in the Smoky Mountains. I appreciate you and your blog!

Hmmm. Connie raises an interesting question. Bears v snakes. Which would you rather run into on the trail?

I really do like to see black bears in the wild. The sighting gets your heart pumping, but by and large, my experience has been that they are more curious than threatening. Snakes are neither threatening nor curious.

Everything changes if the encounter is a surprise. Surprise a bear or a rattler and things can go bad in a hurry.

I'm thinking a surprised rattler might not choose flight and may fight, which means a strike. I don't know if a rattler bite is of the ruin your day variety or lose your life variety.

A surprised bear, particularly one with cubs, would likely choose fight, and that really can't go well.

OK. I'd rather surprise a rattler than a mother bear with cubs. Otherwise I'd rather surprise a bear. At a distance I'd rather see a bear than a rattler.

So, Doug, do I die of ignorance?

Awesome blog!

Hey Doug - headed up in a week to start my GSMNP section hike. How are the water sources looking along the trail right now? We will be starting out at Fontana next Monday morning. Hope to see you somewhere on the trail!!
